Level 3 Patterns

There are 16 ‘Patterns’ Tracks. These are meant for children and adults with profound learning difficulties, to help them get to grips with patterns in sound – with repetition and regular change. Perceiving patterns enables us to make sense of the world, to remember what has happened and to anticipate what is coming next.

First there are patterns made up of sounds that occur naturally in everyday life (Tracks 1–5).

Patterns: Track 1 – Water dripping
Patterns: Track 2 – Clocks ticking
Patterns: Track 3 – Footsteps
Patterns: Track 4 – Laughing
Patterns: Track 5 – Simple birdsong

Then there are digital everyday sounds (Tracks 6–8).

Patterns: Track 6 – Repeated chimes
Patterns: Track 7 – Electronic beeping
Patterns: Track 8 – Submarine sonar

And finally the simplest forms of pattern that occur in music: repeated notes and short fragments of melody that move up or down (Tracks 9–16).

Patterns: Track 9 – Two notes the same
Patterns: Track 10 – Three notes the same
Patterns: Track 11 – Four notes the same
Patterns: Track 12 – Walking down a scale
Patterns: Track 13 – Walking up a scale
Patterns: Track 14 – Jumping down a scale
Patterns: Track 15 – Jumping up a scale
Patterns: Track 16 – Rocking on two notes
