Play me short and snappy rhythms on percussion instruments
Little Soundabout: Level 4 | Card: 33 | Category: Reactive
Short rhythmic patterns may be the first elements of musical structure I can grasp; use Soundabout Music Tracks: Motifs

- Go ‘rat-a-tat-tat’, on a drum or tambourine, then, after a short pause, do it again, and then again, making repeated chains of short rhythms
- With a pair of maracas, go ‘shake-shake-bang’,‘shake-shake-bang’, then pause, and then make the pattern again
- Now go ‘ting-a-ling-a-ling’, ‘ting-a-ling-a-ling’,using a triangle or cymbal
- Stop the patterns in mid-flow, and see if I react
- Make ‘daisy-chains’ in sound on different
- instruments: ‘tap-tap-tap’ on the drum and then on the tambourine, for example
- Finally, with family members or friends, make chains of different bursts of rhythm connected together – ‘rat-a-tat-tat’, shake-shake-bang’,‘ting-a-ling-a-ling’, for example, with a steady underlying beat
