How to use Soundabout Life cards

This innovative series of cards sets out simple, everyday activities that use music and sound to enrich the lives of young adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Each colourful card presents ideas that parents and others can do with the young child (Little Soundabout) or young adult (Soundabout Life) in their care, at home and when out and about.

Within each collection you will find:

  • 48 cards that set out over 200 activities involving sound and music in an accessible way, with no special skills or knowledge needed
  • The pioneering deconstructed ‘Soundabout Music Tracks’, that make music truly accessible to people with the most profound disabilities
  • Engaging videos of Soundabout Music Practitioners Will (Little Soundabout) and Karen (Soundabout Life) bringing specific cards to life

Card Levels

Level 2

Sounds Interesting! Level 2 is all about exploring simple sounds and developing an awareness of self, others and the wider world through sound.

Your young adult might respond to a variety of sounds, make simple sounds deliberately with their voice or sound makers, or use sound to engage with other people. They might also connect movement and feelings with sound and show an emerging awareness of self, others and the wider world through sound.

Level 3

Copy me, copy you! Level 3 is all about recognising and making simple patterns in sound and developing an understanding of self, others and the wider world through simple sound patterns.

Your young adult might engage with patterns of sound, create simple patterns in sound with their voice or instruments, or copy individual sounds or patterns in sound played by others. They might also connect movement and feelings with patterns in sound and show an awareness of self, others and the wider world through patterns in sound.

Level 4

Bits of pieces! Level 4 is all about recognising and making ‘chunks’ of music and developing an understanding of self, others and the wider world through musical motifs.

Your young adult might recognise and respond to musical phrases, create simple musical motifs themselves, or engage in musical dialogues with other people using musical chunks. They might also connect movement and feelings with musical chunks and show an awareness of self, others and the wider world through musical motifs.
